A LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

Shiviti is a community…

“Shiviti Hashem l’negdi tamid”–“I place Hashem before me always.”

My intentions when building Shiviti were to create a learning space for women that would provide the kind of study that I spent a lifetime piecing together for myself–one that I hoped would bring me to the place of “Shiviti Hashem l’negdi tamid”–to feel Hashem’s Presence with me always.

When we began, I was focused on creating a year-long program for women either already in Jewish education or hoping to enter the field who were seeking greater depth, more soul, in their learning. They were seeking an environment where their creative endeavors were also celebrated; where their life experience was valued; where age was not a factor, only the desire of the heart and the willingness to work. The greater goal was to help cultivate a cohort of learned and soulful women who would make their contributions to the Jewish people felt, in whatever field they entered or already operated.

It became clear early on that many of our classes were also a good fit for women who just wanted to learn–to grow and deepen their connection with their Jewish practice, in a way that stayed true and close to the original sources but that spoke in a language they could understand and apply. So Shiviti was also, from the beginning, about community education–strong and deep learning for women everywhere.

Our students come from all over the world, from a broad variety of Jewish backgrounds, with a spectrum of talents and areas of expertise of their own to contribute, and above all are magnificent Jewish women who are seeking a closer relationship with their Creator, with others, and with themselves. Torah study–intense, joyous, perplexing, challenging, comforting–is the hearth that we gather ourselves around, and its light warms us and illuminates our way.

Online learning has proven to be a blessing; it’s through these fiber and satellite connections that we’ve woven a community of learning for women that will, with G-d’s help, continue to expand and embrace the many women all over the world who are seeking the uniquely nourishing Torah that comes forth from the beating heart of Yerushalayim.
I’m so looking forward to learning with you!

Yehudis Golshevsky
